Scope of starting position

 

To be responsible for delivering information products and analysis related to the global maritime freight transport market to internal team members and external clients. 

 

Full time, 40 hours/week, based in the Chester office but some travel in the UK and overseas may be required.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

This Data Analyst role involves carrying out research and maintaining and enhancing existing databases and then completing data analysis to inform projects for the company’s internal team and for external clients. The projects that the company undertakes are generally focused on ports, container and roll-on roll-off shipping, rail freight, logistics and air freight. The successful candidate’s responsibilities, which will involve working under the supervision of more senior members of staff, will include:

 

  • Researching and maintaining an in-house database on container port terminals around the world;
  • Assisting a colleague to research and maintain an in-house global database of ship deployment and traffic volumes;
  • Assembling, maintaining and validating an in-house database of global trade;
  • Developing and analysing Automatic Identification System (AIS) data on ship movements; and
  • Extracting, analysing and presenting data from the above databases for use in presentations and reports for clients and for use with social media.

 

Working terms and conditions

 

The role will be based at MDS Transmodal’s Chester office and initially the candidate will be expected to attend the office for five days per week to allow for face-to-face supervision of his or her work and face-to-face progress meetings. However, as familiarity with MDST culture and values and working with colleagues develops, there will be flexibility to work part of the week from home in line with the company’s flexible working policy. This role may, in due course, involve some travel both in the UK and overseas.

 

While the role is permanent, it will be subject to a six-month probationary period. 

 

Required skills & interests

 

  • Graduate in a numerate subject;
  • Ability to assemble, analyse and interpret datasets using MS Excel and MS Access;
  • Ability or willingness to learn to use SQL and coding/programming;
  • Ability to multi-task and schedule work for different members of staff against deadlines;
  • An interest in global trade and maritime transport;
  • Ability to use MS Word and MS PowerPoint to produce professional reports and presentations; and
  • Good writing and verbal presentational skills in the English language.


Annual salary


£28-34,000 depending on experience
