Salary: Starting Salary £30,000 (Negotiable Dependent on Experience).

Potential for performance-related bonus.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Hybrid. Team members are expected to work from our Chester office every Thursday and Friday, with additional flexibility for remote working and collaboration. We also have quarterly team meetups to foster team cohesion and innovation.

Travel: Some travel within the UK is required.

Job Description

As a Behavioural Scientist, you will:

  • Supervise Projects and People: Oversee the delivery of appropriate projects including behavioural analysis, intervention design, evaluation, data analysis, report writing, proposals, research and training. In addition, direct line management and mentoring of junior team members.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement: As an outward-facing role, build strong relationships to help clients understand how behavioural insights can be applied to overcome a wide range of business and societal challenges, in an accessible manner. Work closely with them to understand, clarify and refine their needs and expectations as project progress, from inception to closure.
  • Organisation and Coordination: Work on several projects at once and use proven project management skills to deliver project to time, cost and scope. Use project management tools to keep yourself and the team aligned and on track to successfully complete their tasks.
  • Apply Behavioural Science Frameworks, Principles and Insights: Utilise advanced behavioural models and frameworks to conduct research and develop actionable strategies and interventions. Ensure all strategies and solutions are empirically tested to drive real-world impact.
  • Empirically test, hypothesis and interventions: Combine academic flair with real world pragmatism to ensure that our strategies and solutions are not just theoretically sound but can add meaningful value in a feasible, acceptable and timely manner.


Key responsibilities

Ability to work independently to deliver the following services:

  • Applying behavioural science frameworks and methods to real world problems and client projects.
  • Agile project management of delegated projects including regular client liaison and day-to-day support to ensure timely delivery of high-quality outcomes.
  • Light-touch literature reviews to inform evidence-based strategies and interventions.
  • Designing and conducting both quantitative and qualitative analysis to drive actionable insights.
  • Translating findings into debriefing sessions, insight reports, presentations.
  • Running workshops/training, debriefing sessions to explain how behavioural problems can be addressed using behavioural science, explaining the SoMoCo “THIS” model. 
  • Conducting community engagement activity, enabling clients to connect with and codesign policy and services with their stakeholders and end users.
  • Supporting the client to create and embed new policies, communications or real-world interventions.
  • Written copy for communications, writing proposals, pitching for new projects.
  • Supervising junior team members and contributing to internal knowledge sharing.
  • General tasks relating to organisational and/or business development.
  • Remaining open and flexible. As with any consultancy, there will be occasions when you are asked to take on other roles/tasks that are necessary to meeting client or operational needs.


Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications

Essential Experience:

  • Masters Degree or equivalent in Behavioural Science, or Behavioural Economics
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a commercial setting, ideally in a consultancy with involvement in various aspects of consultancy work
  • Agile project management experience with proven ability to work to deadlines, meet targets and deliver high-quality outputs within scope
  • Ability to explain and present complex theoretical and scientific concepts in simple terms appropriate to the audience
  • Experience in designing, facilitating and implementing workshops
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely and unsure that messages have been understood and received


Desirable Experience:

  • Understanding of behavioural design which fuses learning from human centred design and behavioural science to change the way people behave and make decisions
  • Experience in line management, including leading teams, driving performance and mentoring junior colleagues to achieve personal growth
  • Project management qualifications such as APMG Agile or PRINCE2
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Avaza or similar
  • Experience of both private and public sector clients
  • Research methods qualifications
  • Competency in statistical analysis software (R, Stata, SPSS)
  • Able to develop a strategy and identify gaps and weaknesses
  • Experience in designing research and evidence gathering to inform behavioural interventions and in evaluating the impact of behavioural interventions.
  • Proven ability to provide specialist advice to influence decision making and to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to influence outcomes such as services and delivery.
